Senior Dog Wellness Recommendations
|
|
For dogs over 7 years - small breeds
The first year of a dog's life is equivalent to 15 years in a human's life. Thereafter one year is equivalent to 7 human years. |
We Recommend:
Exam
every 6 months to catch problems early, while changes can still be instituted.Fish oil
supplementation to promote healthy coat, joints, eyes, and heart.Vaccinations:
Distemper, Adenovirus, Parvo combo vaccination and Rabies every 3 years. Bordetella every 6 months if pet goes to the groomer, dog park, training or anywhere else that they are exposed, otherwise yearly (If your pet is boarding, getting a bath or staying in the clinic for any reason then the bordetella vaccine is required to have been given within 6 months). Rattlesnake and Lyme vaccinations are recommended for dogs who go on hikes or live in areas where Rattlesnakes have been seen.Fecal Ova and Parasite and Giardia ELISA test:
Recommended annually or more frequent if your pet develops diarrhea or vomiting. This is especially important if you have children! We have a high incidence of giardia in this area and it is transmissable to humans. Furthermore, many animals carry and shed the microscopic parasite without showing signs of diarrhea or vomiting.Full Blood Panel and Urinalysis:
These tests screen for liver, kidney, blood cells and urine abnormalities. We will also now start checking thyroid levels annually. We want to know if there are hidden health issues, but also have a normal baseline for your pet, so that we know what your pet's normal values are.Year Round Heartworm Prevention and Annual testing:
Heartworm (transmitted by mosquitos) is now in the area. It is still a low prevalence compared to other parts of the country, but we are seeing more and more of this deadly disease. We strongly recommend all dogs be on preventatives year round. We have seen indoor only cats in Lake Forest contract this parasite, so all dogs have the potential to become infected.Feeding:
